The Clare Milne Trust has recently supported iSightCornwall in launching a project designed to improve the mental, physical, and mobility health of blind and partially sighted people in Cornwall. Through a focus on three key themes—Be Active, Keep Learning, and Together—the initiative offers a range of activities that help beneficiaries feel secure in their environment and empower them to engage independently. This support not only fosters greater independence but also encourages social connections, strengthens community ties, and combats loneliness and isolation.
The grant provided funding to recruit and train volunteers, match-fund the costs of new specialist activities like seated surfing and pottery, establish two new lunch groups, expand capacity at four existing clubs, and contribute towards transport costs. These efforts help individuals stay active, learn new skills, connect with others, and build lasting friendships.
Some fabulous insightful quotes
“I don’t think you understand how much these sessions of seated surfing helped. It was so freeing being at one with nature. I’ve been having a hard time and have lost my motivation since my eyesight has gotten worse. Today has changed everything.”
“It was exciting to go kayaking. I had never been on or in the water before, but after 20 minutes I was paddling. I felt free because I was in charge of the boat. Everyone who helped out was great, especially the volunteers.”
“I had nothing to look forward to since I lost my sight last year. My walking buddy lifts my spirits and is the best thing that’s happened to me in years. It makes me less stressed and worried about what I can’t do. I try to enjoy the beautiful place where I live, the fresh air, and the chance to exercise again instead of just sitting in my chair all day.”
“I want to inspire other people with visual impairments to show them that life doesn’t have to stop with sight loss and that it’s just about finding other ways of doing things. It would be great eventually to have a group of us all enjoying riding a tandem!”
The Clare Milne Trust wishes iSightCornwall continued success in their important work.
