A modern, forward-thinking school, with an amazing pedigree.

The Clare Milne Trust was proud to join The Deaf Academy recently as it marked an extraordinary milestone, the 200th anniversary of the UK’s oldest deaf school, in Exmouth, Devon. The event brought together students, families, alumni, staff, governors and many long‑standing supporters to celebrate two centuries of Deaf education, culture and community.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal attended as guest of honour, recognising the Academy’s remarkable history and its enduring contribution to Deaf young people across the region. The day was truly inspirational and carried a strong sense of pride and reflection, honouring the Academy’s origins in 1826 and the generations of pupils whose lives have been shaped there.

Since relocating to its purpose‑built campus in Exmouth in 2020, the Academy has created a modern, accessible environment shaped around Deaf identity and communication. The Princess was photographed in the fabulous Clare Milne Atrium, a bright, welcoming space made possible through support from The Clare Milne Trust, right at the heart of this excellent school. It stands as a lasting symbol of Clare Milne’s legacy and the Trust’s long relationship with the Academy.

Being invited to share in this bicentenary celebration was a privilege. The Deaf Academy’s story is one of resilience, innovation and community, qualities that continue to resonate strongly with the values of The Clare Milne Trust.
